Major Requirements

The requirements for the International Relations (IR) major are detailed in the IR Program Advising Handbook.

Important Note: Students enrolled at UC Davis as freshmen in fall 2005 must follow the 2005 version of the IR Program Advising Handbook. UC Davis students who began their college career (either at UC Davis or another college) prior to fall 2005 may choose to follow the requirements in (a) the version of the Handbook in effect when they began college OR (b) the 2005 version (but not both). See Announcements for further details.

Declaring the Major

The International Relations Program is an impacted major. Because of this, students who are not admitted directly into IR upon admission to UC Davis must complete the following five courses with a combined grade point average of at least 2.50 for courses taken at Davis or another four-year institution:

• Economics 1A or Anthropology 2
• Economics 1B
• History 4C or 10C
• International Relations 1 or Political Science 3
• Statistics 13 or Sociology 46B

One additional lower division course is required for graduation but not for admission to the major. See the IR Handbook for details.

Upon completion of these courses, students seeking admission to the major must see an IR advisor to petition to be admitted to the major. To apply transfer courses to the major, students must present the transfer transcript. The GPA requirement for transfer courses is at least 3.00 for two-year and at least 2.50 for four-year colleges. Upon verification of the grade point average among those courses, an IR advisor will sign the petition for admission to the major.

We recommend consultation with the IR staff advisor as you plan your lower division coursework. If the grade point average in the required lower division courses is below the required 2.50, consultation with the staff advisor is mandatory.
